Portfolio: No Thumbs: Using featured images from NextGEN gallery

I am using NextGEN gallery 1.9.12 with Dejavu 2.2 and am setting Featured Images in all pages/posts using the NextGEN gallery (where the default directory for gallery images is /wp-content/gallery/). The Portfolio detail page works fine but the Portfolio grid which should show the thumb doesn't, it shows a blank image. If I also add the Featured Image in the bottom of the portfolio post (rather than the WP feature image area) then it's still a blank thumb but if I click the blank thumb it does load the Featured Image in lightbox.

    See screenshot:

I use the exact same process for Blog and it works fine, it shows the thumb and the Featured Image on the post page as it should. Featured Image being called from NextGEN gallery.

Yes Elliott, I have that in there from earlier this month based on this post:

    http://mysitemyway.com/support/topic/second-and-subsequent-featured-images-not-displaying-in-post#post-116529

This post fixed the issue that Featured Image from NextGEN gallery weren't showing at all. Now they do show on pages, posts, portfolio. It's the portfolio THUMB that's not showing per screenshot above. They show on regular Blog posts but not on the portfolio grid.

Here's the source I see when I inspect the blank thumbnail in browser:

    <span id="416_img_1"><img class="hover_fade_js" style="opacity: 1;" alt="" title="Services P (draft not used)" src="http://<mysite>.com/wp-content/themes/dejavu/lib/scripts/timthumb/thumb.php?src=http://<mysite>.com/wp-includes/images/crystal/default.png&w=184&h=114&zc=1&q=100" height="114" width="184"></span>

Updates/Progress (in case anyone else experiencing same issue).

NXPAGE: I do have the mod per this instruction which fixed the NextGEN featured images not showing, they now show on pages/posts. Just not on the Portfolio grid thumbnail. Thumbs do show on Blog posts.

    http://mysitemyway.com/docs/index.php/NextGEN_Gallery#Using_the_NextGEN_featured_images

ELLIOTT: What's currently being shown there is this, http://&lt;yoursite&gt;.com/wp-includes/images/crystal/default.png. Is there some kind of thumbnail feature that the nextGEN gallery uses? I've seen this when people use the Wordpress thumbnail feature in their media library. When you use the portfolio / blog shortcodes the featured image does not display but instead of a thumbnail they have created within Wordpress of that image.

NXPAGE: If you log in you'll see that there are no images in the Wordpress Media Library (except a logo and background). All images are in NextGEN gallery and stored in the respective gallery. For example all Featured Images are stored in /wp-content/gallery/featured-images/thumbs/. NextGEN options panel for Thumbs only includes: width/height, aspect ratio and quality. Any other idea?

ELLIOTT: Try deleting the default.png image.

NXPAGE: That just shows no thumb at all, not even the placeholder:
