Infocus is available for easy translation with .mo file (the biggest part)

  1. Hi everyone!

    I've spent some days working on it.
    I made the biggest part of the theme available for translation with .mo file and I want to share it with you. All the changed files are in archive - infocus-translated.zip

    All you have to do is:
    -----------------------------

    1. Replace the files with those from the attached archive:
    /wp-content/themes/infocus/404.php
    /wp-content/themes/infocus/archive.php
    /wp-content/themes/infocus/comments.php
    /wp-content/themes/infocus/header.php
    /wp-content/themes/infocus/search.php
    /wp-content/themes/infocus/searchform.php

    /wp-content/themes/infocus/lib/classes/breadcrumb.php

    /wp-content/themes/infocus/lib/functions/posts.php
    /wp-content/themes/infocus/lib/functions/theme-functions.php
    /wp-content/themes/infocus/lib/functions/widgets.php

    /wp-content/themes/infocus/lib/includes/featured-categories.php
    /wp-content/themes/infocus/lib/includes/featured-custom.php
    /wp-content/themes/infocus/lib/includes/sitemap-content.php
    /wp-content/themes/infocus/lib/includes/template-blog.php
    /wp-content/themes/infocus/lib/includes/template-portfolio-full.php
    /wp-content/themes/infocus/lib/includes/template-portfolio-gallery.php
    /wp-content/themes/infocus/lib/includes/template-portfolio-single.php
    /wp-content/themes/infocus/lib/includes/template-single.php

    2. Using http://www.poedit.net/ create your own .po file based on mine - bg_BG.po from the attached archive. After saving your new .po file the .mo file will be generated. Now you have to upload YOUR .mo file in your /wp-content/languages/ directory.

    3. Install some multilanguage plugin and put the laguage switching buttons in your site. I recommend plugins qTranslate or WPML.

    *Notes!!!
    ----------------
    a) you must put correct name for your .po and .mo files with propriate lang codes, for expample if the file is in English, the name has to be - en_EN.po and en_EN.mo, for Bulgarian - bg_BG.po and bg_BG.mo, German - de_DE.po and de_DE.mo etc.

    b) there was a little bug in the theme in switching between languages, if you click on "Home" or logo. I corrected that in the file header.php

    Greetings,
    Maya

    Hi MayaS,

    Thanks, I have my .mo and .po fire for a french traduction, fr_FR.po.

    I have my wordpress in french, but where must I upload the .po and .mo file? If I put it in wp-content, all my admin language switch to english!

    Thank you for your answer.

    Posted 1 year ago #
  4. Hello, vphan!

    You have to put it in /wp-content/languages/ directory.

    P.S. If you have two .mo files - one for the administration and another for the public site, you must merge them info one single file.

    Hello MayaS,

    Yes, I have already one fr_FR.po for wordpress on this folder already , so should I merge this one and the second one I just created? But how do I merge those 2 files without scratchting one by the other?

    Thank you MayaS

    Posted 1 year ago #
  6. Try to open them with some code editor like Notepad++.

    P.S. Please, note *.po files are just source files, but for wordpress translation you really need generated *.mo file.

    Hello Mayas,

    I opened the fr_FR.po in smultron on mac, what should I do now?

    Thank you

  8. Downoald the archive I've attached. Open bg_BG.po file in code editor like Notepad++. Copy everything below line 13. (Because the information from line 1 to 12 probably еxists in your main fr_FR.po file)

    Now open your main fr_FR.po file with Notepad++. Paste the information from the previous file. Replace bulgarian text with french. Save your file. Open it with Poedit and save it. That must generate your new fr_FR.mo file.

  10. This is just a file containing text strings. It doesn't matter where you will put copied text. But I recommend to put new lines at the end of your main fr_FR.po file, in order to find them fast if you wish to make some changes in the future.

  15. Sorry, but I still can not see what is written! If you try to read the error details I am sure you will be able to fix them all by yourself. Probably some of the strings are duplicating and you just have to correct that.

    I am trying this as well to put it all in Spanish, but am also getting these duplicate message definition errors.

    Whenever I have translated a theme before I have never had to merge it with the main WP translation file. Should there not be another location to place it where the theme reads that alone?

    @lguazu67,

    Your main WP translation is in wp-content/languages
    The theme MO file goes to /wp-content/themes/YOURTHEME

    The .php files are usable with qTranslate
    For WPML, you need files with textdomain values in every call:
    __('string','your-textdomain'); to return the translation or
    _e('string','your-textdomain'); to echo the translation

    Thanks MayaS and greetings from Sofia ;-)

  22. Hi, lguazu67!

    I've already helped vphan to remove the duplicated lines. It is not so difficult. You just have to find the lines and merge them into one line. That's all.

    BrandmMover, I'm glad you found it useful :)

    BrandMover and MayaS,

    Thank you to both of you for your help! I have partially implemented your suggestions, but have a few questions.

    1. When I put the theme MO file into /wp-content/themes/mytheme, qTranslate does not seem to pull it in. It looks to me like the main WP translation is overriding my theme translations.
    2. Since I am writing my site in Spanish, I do not need or want WPML, so qTranslate plugin seems like "overkill" for my needs. Would this mean that maybe the simplest thing for me would be to do MayaS' merging approach or simply "hunt and peck" translate the php files directly?

  24. Hi MayaS and vphan

    I carefully follow your advices, in order to make my website (an eBook) bilingual (English & French).

    So, with:
    - a fresh Wordpress 3.0.1-fr_FR
    - InFocus theme
    - two/three posts in my portfolio to start with
    - qTranslate plug-in*
    - The (above) tutorial in order to make bilingual InFocus

    ...I succeded in making almost my website bilingual. But I have some issues, still...

    1. How can I indicate now for each posts, the English and French version of the InFocus Portfolio Options (ie. Personalized Fields)? How can I tweak this? (There is no language options for this part). Because... how can we - for instance - specify a Post teaser text for each versions of our website?

    2. For the homepage, the only option that we have in order to get a multilingual Slider Image (I am thinking of the Slider Text) is to configured it so that it takes automatically display the posts from categorie(s) we will have choose to put on upfront (and not manually). And so, I was wondering if there was a possibility to change the source of this Slider Text (is it possible to refere to the Teaser Text for instance, or another personnalized field? One for the first language, the other for the other one...?

    Thx a lot for your help, patience, ideas... (I'm not a pro in PHP, but I can manage and learn, as I am putting my hands in it, deeper, and deeper in this messy and powerful thing... :o)

    *qTranslate plug-in: I found out that the files MayaS provided to us in the begining of this post very usefull. However, people who will use/need them have to know that the PHP files have been tweaked with the intention that Wordpress is running with qTranslate plug-in, and not WPML.

    (ENGLISH)

    Hi astonwood,

    Here, in the ZIP file, you'll find all the tweaks I've done so far for my upcoming website, which will be both in English and French languages. In order for this to work, you'll need the same base as I have, as follow...

    Wordpress 3.0.1-fr_FR
    -> Theme: InFocus 1.6
    -> Plug-In: qTranslate 2.5.9

    If, of course, you have any ideas to make my tweaks even better, don't hesitate to post in return on my work, the community will be pleased!

    TWEAK PROCEDURE
    Just replace the original files on your server by the one I'm providing in this ZIP file. You'll find the following tweaks/changes afterwords...

    TWEAK LIST, AND THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT MULTILINGUISM WITHIN QTRANSLATE AND INFOCUS

    1. INFOCUS THEME IS FULLY (ALMOST) BILINGUAL: ENGLISH AND FRENCH.
    -> All the theme's markups written in "hard" English in the PHP files have been replaced by the multilingual qTranslate markups, which makes them now refering to the markups contained in .po and .mo files.

    2. QTRANSLATE LANGUAGE SELECTOR FULLY INTEGRATED IN HEADER'S MAIN MENU
    -> I've lightly tweaked two files from qTranslate plug-in, in order to nicely put the language chooser inside the Top main-menu, as flag images.

    3. (NEW) CUSTOM HOMEPAGE'S SLIDER TEXT IN "STAGE" MODE, AND MULTILINGUAL!
    By default, whenever the homepage's inFocus slider is in "stage" mode and use Post Categories to display them automatically, the text that it displays corresponds then to the Post's first words, which can be very frustrating for the webmaster that I am. So if you prefere to write yourselves the short text that will be displayed in the slider, in stage mode, in order to better announce your posts in it, I've created a fix that will not only allow you to achieve that, but which also is compatible with qTranslate Quicktags, i.e. multilingual. Here how-to:

    I. Inside Wordpress Administration Interface, in the InFocus Section, Homepage part, please check first that for the option "Homepage Image Slider Source" you have selected the second choice: "I Would Like the Homepage Image Slider to use Post Categories that I Choose" ("Custom Define" mode is sadly still not multilingual/qTranslate QuickTags compatible with the changes that I propose today)

    II. Inside the edition section of an Article, as in the Custom Fields section you can normally find...
    - a markup for the image to display inside the slider: frontpage_image
    - a markup to specify the slider's mode: frontpage_stage
    ...you will now have to create a custom field, which will indicates to the homepage' slider the text to display for your article. In order to do achieve that, go to "Add a Custom Field", and click on "Add a new one" and create the custom field that follows: frontpage_teaser_text.
    NB. For the next articles, you will find this new field inside the custom field list in the "Add a Custom Field" section.

    III. Afterwords, indicate the text you want to display inside the homepage slider, in the "Value" section next to your new custom field. In order to make it multilingual, you will have to use qTranslate's QuickTags. For instance:

    <!--:fr-->Voici le texte d'accroche de mon article pour mon lectorat francophone<!--:-->
    <!--:en-->This is my post's teaser text for the English audience<!--:-->

    4. PORTFOLIO POST'S TEASER TEXTS ARE NOW MULTILINGUAL
    (Inside the edition section of an Article, in Wordpress Administration)
    In order to display the post teaser text inside Portfolio pages in the appropriate language, you can now use qTranslate QuickTags. You will be able to put them, either
    - in the Custom field portfolio_teaser_text
    - or in the "Portfolio Teaser Text" field, from "inFocus Portfolio Page Options" section (see precedent exemple, in 3.III)

    ...and I think that's all I've manage to tweaked for now!

    _______________________________________________________________________________________________

    (FRANÇAIS)

    Salut astonwood,

    Dans le fichier ZIP, vous trouverez les fichiers modifiés que j'utilises pour rendre la base de mon futur site web pleinement bilingue Français/Anglais. Afin d'utiliser correctement ces fichiers modifiés, je vous recommande d'utiliser la même base que la mienne, à savoir...

    Wordpress 3.0.1-fr_FR
    -> Theme: InFocus 1.6
    -> Plug-In: qTranslate 2.5.9

    Si bien sûr vous pouvez y apporter des améliorations, je suis preneur - et la communauté aussi!

    PROCÉDURE D'INSTALLATION
    Dès que vous aurez cette base pré-requise installée et opérante sur votre serveur, remplacez simplement les fichiers d'origine par ceux contenus dans le ZIP que je vous fournis, dans les emplacements respectifs.

    LISTE DES MODIFICATIONS INDUITES ET DES SPÉCIFICITÉS QTRANSLATE/INFOCUS

    1. LE THÈME EST (PRESQUE) PLEINEMENT BILINGUE: ANGLAIS ET FRANÇAIS.
    Toutes les balises du thème écrites en anglais et en "dur" dans le PHP ont été remplacées par le balisage multilingue de qTranslate, ce dernier faisant référence aux balises contenues dans les fichiers .po et .mo.

    2. LE MENU QTRANSLATE DE SÉLECTION DE LANGUE INTÉGRÉ AU MENU-PRINCIPAL EN HAUT DE PAGE.
    J'ai modifié légèrement deux fichiers du plug-in qTranslate, afin de permettre au sélecteur de langue de s'intégrer proprement dans le menu principal du site en haut de page, sous forme d'images-drapeaux.

    3. (NOUVEAU) LE TEXTE D'ACCROCHE DES ARTICLES DANS LE SLIDER EN PAGE D'ACCUEIL EST DÉSORMAIS PERSONNALISABLE EN MODE "STAGE", ET MULTILINGUE EN PLUS !
    Par défaut, lorsque le slider en page d'accueil d'InFocus est en mode "stage" et met en avant les articles "par catégorie" de manière automatique, le texte qu'il affiche correspond automatiquement au début des articles. Cela a le don d'énerver certain webmasters (comme moi) qui préfèrent écrire ou indiquer eux-même le texte court qu'ils veulent voir pour mettre en avant dans le slider les articles concernés. Pour palier à ce problème, j'ai donc créé un nouveau champ personnalisé, à indiquer pour chaque articles concernés, vous permettant d'afficher ce que vous voulez, et en plus, dans la langue correspondante, au moyen des QuickTags de qTranslate. Petit tutoriel...

    I. Dans l'interface d'administration WordPress, section InFocus, onglet Homepage, vérifiez bien que pour l'option "Homepage Image Slider Source" soit sélectionné le second choix "I Would Like the Homepage Image Slider to use Post Categories that I Choose" (le mode "Custom Define" n'est pas encore bilingue à l'heure actuelle, dans les modifs ci-jointes)

    II. Dans la page d'édition d'un article, au même titre que dans la liste des champs personnalisés vous avez normalement...
    - une balise pour l'image à afficher dans le slider: frontpage_image
    - une balise pour spécifier le mode du slider: frontpage_stage
    ...vous allez maintenant devoir créer votre champ personnalisé correspondant au texte à afficher dans le slider pour cet article. Pour ce faire, dans la partie "Ajouter un champ personnalisé" cliquez sur "Saisissez-en un nouveau" et créez le champ suivant: frontpage_teaser_text.
    NB. Pour vos futurs articles, vous n'aurez qu'à sélectionner ce champ, dans la liste des champs personnalisés à spécifier.

    III. Indiquez ensuite le texte que désirez voir s'afficher dans le slider en home page, dans la partie "Valeur". Pour que ce texte soit multilingue, vous devez utiliser les QuickTags de qTranslate. Exemple:

    <!--:fr-->Voici le texte d'accroche de mon article pour mon lectorat francophone<!--:-->
    <!--:en-->This is my post's teaser text for the English audience<!--:-->

    4. LE TEXTE D'ACCROCHE DES ARTICLES DANS LES PAGES PORTFOLIO EST DÉSORMAIS MULTILINGUE
    Dans la page d'édition d'un article - Afin d'afficher un texte d'accroche d'article dans la langue correspondante, dans les pages portfolio, vous pouvez désormais utiliser les QuickTags qTranslate, au choix
    - dans le champ personnalisé portfolio_teaser_text
    - dans la rubrique "Portfolio Teaser Text" de la partie "inFocus Portfolio Page Options" (voir exemple précédemment, en 3.III)

    ...et je crois que c'est tout, pour le moment, pour ce qui est de ma pierre à l'édifice...

    I have been postponing this part of my website project. But it has to happen sometime, so why not now?

    I am quite a novice when it comes to wordpress but bought the infocus theme and it's actually easy to personalize it. So far things are quite do-able with all the easy references and step by step guides. Unfortunately, I have not been able to manage this qtranslate Plugin.
    I have been doing some reading, not extensive to be honest (some terms I just don't understand), and I haven't been able to figure it out.

    I have for instant done what MayaS wrote but somehow my homepage changed a bit, which I didn't want, so I undid almost everything.
    What I know so far, is that I need .mo files for my website to use qtranslate. I read this on the qtranslate forum:
    How to manually install .mo files

    Normally, qTranslate will download all .mo files automatically, but if you want to manually manage all .mo files, you can follow the Wordpress Guide "Installing WordPress in Your Language" to install them.'

    I have installed qtranslate, but qtranslate is not translating anything. Is it because qtranslate hasn't downloaded the .mo files automatically as it should?

    I would like to know more about how to make this plugin work and how to get it to work, but I am sure that most of you people are too busy to explain everything. Does anyone maybe know a website or some basic step by step things I could read so I can get this plugin to work? I don't want to come off looking like a lazy person cause I am not, but this is all a bit new to me and sometimes the information is a bit overwhelming.

    Hello davindewater, sorry for the late reply.

    Here is a good tutorial on getting started with Qtranslate, http://www.qianqin.de/qtranslate/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=3.

    You might also be interested in WPML but they just started charging for it recently, http://wpml.org/.

    When our new framework is released we will be doing lots of tutorials and we'll be sure to include Qtranslate as one of them so stay tuned!

  30. I would like to use this but when i tried it changed my custom search bar. :(

    Btw i have Turkish Mo and Po files. I translated them and merge with the original language files as Maya told on the above part.

    You can download and use if you want.

    Hello OnurDemirsoy,

    Your trying to translate your theme correct? Do you need it in just one language or multiple languages?

  33. I need it in multiple languages.

    I customized the theme a bit but I didn't change php files so much. Only added a few things.

    This one is for using Ubuntu web font:
    <link href='http://fonts.googleapis.com/css?family=Ubuntu:300,400,500,700,300italic,400italic' rel='stylesheet' type='text/css'>

    This one is for my customized search bar:
    <div style = "position: absolute; top: 30px; right: 0px;">
    <?php echo do_shortcode("[search]"); ?>
    </div>

    This one is for qtrans flags:
    <?php qtrans_generateLanguageSelectCode('image'); ?>

    I added these all to the header.php file. I dont remember if I changed anything else but I guess I didnt. I didnt change anything in other files, except css files.

    My site looks perfect now without these changes.
    But using Maya's file changed the looking of my customized search bar. I guess I need to add these parameters after I uploaded her files but dont know how to correctly use them.

    Maya's translations were for a previous version of inFocus. If your wanting to make your site multi lingual then I would check out the WPML or QTranslate plugins,

  35. Well i am using qtranslate and created the .mo file (and .po as well) but the plugin only translate the content, not the theme.

    You can see the Turkish page here
    http://www.animativedigital.com/tr/

    It would be so nice if i have an option to translate the theme as well..

    See here, http://mysitemyway.com/docs/index.php/QTranslate#Theme_translation, after translating with Poedit you'll need to upload your .mo file into /wp-content/themes/[your_theme]/languages/.

  37. I did it too. But not working for me. I dont know why.
    It translate some parts, but not the whole site.

    For example: http://www.animativedigital.com/tr/category/portfolio

    Half Turkish, half English..

  38. I solved the issue. Not completely but the most part..

    I had to edit both folders
    wp-content/themes/infocus/languages
    wp-content/languages

    now it is working.
