Having featured videos link to their page instead of playing

Hello - is there a way to have featured videos link to the page that they are from instead of playing?

I'm using featured videos with each blog post and am displaying the blog posts w/ videos on the homepage using the following shortcode:

    [blog_grid column="3" showposts="9" category_in="3" disable="content,more"]

    (from an earlier post: http://mysitemyway.com/support/topic/portfolio-video-thumbnails-vs-blog-post-thumbnails#post-27164)

While I don't want to remove the video altogether because it does add a nice visual instead of just having the Post Title - I would like it if when someone clicked on that particular video, it went to the page where it is featured (so they can watch the full size video).

    Is this possible?

    Cheers.

    Hello blackburn,

If you set your video URL in both the "Fullsize Image For Lightbox" and "Portfolio Video Link" then it will display a small thumbnail instead of your video and when you click it will take you to your single post where the fullsize video will play.

Elliot - I think the above instructions work for a Portfolio but not for blog posts as those options don't appear to be available in regular blog posts... Are these options available for a featured video in a blog post?

For blog posts what you could do is set a featured image and then disable it on the single post and use our video shortcodes instead,

If I set it up like this, what would show on the homepage using the blog shortcode?

    [blog_grid column="3" showposts="9" category_in="3" disable="content,more"]

Would the featured image show (even if it was disabled on the single post) or would the video show?

Ideally I'm looking for the video to display when I use that shortcode but when the user clicks, it either goes to the post (similar to the portfolio).

My first thought is possibly a div that layers over top of the video with a link to the appropriate blog post... but I could be crazy :) I'm sure you have a much more elegant solution given that it already does something like this with the portfolio...

    Hello,

You should try what Elliott suggested. When you create your individual blog post, do not assign a featured video to it. Instead, assign a featured image. Then, in the "General Post Options" box, disable the featured image for the single view: http://mysitemyway.com/docs/index.php?title=Post_Options#Disable_Featured_Post_Image

Now, in the content area of your post, include a video using the video shortcode.

That way, the post's image will be shown in the blog pages, and the video in the single article ones.

    HI Ruderic

I will give this a try this afternoon but I'm not not 100% sure it's going to achieve what I'm looking for.

That way, the post's image will be shown in the blog pages, and the video in the single article ones.

I don't want a featured image to show in the blog pages or homepage - I want the video to show BUT instead of playing when clicked, I would like it to link to the actual post page to view the full size video...

I will send a PM with a link to the site so that you get a better idea of what I'm looking at :) Cheers! Dale

Unfortunately if you have flash inside a page there is not much you can do in regards to interacting with it.

I suppose it might be possible to place a transparent div over the video which will take you to the post when clicked on but that would take some time to code and would have to be considered custom work.
