Flicker/Reload in Firefox?

    In Awake, why are all elements of each page reloaded? For example, if I go from my home page to my About page, the background and other elements shouldn't flicker or be reloaded. But in FF, almost every time the whole page flashes or flickers (or disappears momentarily), and everything seems to be reloaded. How can I stop this?

    Thanks.

    Hi markb1439,

    That shouldn't be happening at all. Though that I'm not sure what's going on in there, I really think it's your browser's cache causing all this. You should enable caching for pages. I'd also like to ask you to check other websites, including http://themes.mysitemyway.com/awake and see if the same thing is going on. Otherwise, if it's only your website doing this, you should give us a link to it, so we can take a look and see what's wrong. There might be a plugin interfering with the theme, but I can't say without taking a look at it.

    Cheers,
    Dorian

    Hi,

    It's still happening. I also see it on your demo as shown above.

    It happens even on a fresh install without plugins. It happens on multiple computers, all with default FireFox installations. So, of course, we want the site to be viewed smoothly by as many users as possible, including those who have not tweaked their FF settings.

    Please advise. :-)

    Can you try your own demo in FF?

    Thanks,

    Mark

    Hi markb1439,

    This appears to be an issue with FireFox and the swfobject flash embed script Awake uses to display YouTube & Vimeo videos:

    http://code.google.com/p/swfobject/

    Currently the only fix is to remove the script.

    Open up the following file:

    wp-content/themes/awake/lib/classes/video.php

    And replace line #'s 80 - 99 with the following:

    	//add_action( 'wp_head', array(&$this, 'Head') );
    	add_action( 'the_content', array(&$this, 'SWFObjectCalls'), 50 );
    	add_filter( 'widget_text', 'do_shortcode', 11 ); // Videos in the text widget
    	add_action( 'widget_text', array(&$this, 'SWFObjectCalls'), 50 );

    	// Register shortcodes
    	add_shortcode( 'youtube', array(&$this, 'shortcode_youtube') );
    	add_shortcode( 'vimeo', array(&$this, 'shortcode_vimeo') );

    	// Replace bundled SWFObject if it's older
    	if ( !is_a($wp_scripts, 'WP_Scripts') )
    		$wp_scripts = new WP_Scripts();
    	if ( !empty($wp_scripts->registered) && !empty($wp_scripts->registered['swfobject']) && !empty($wp_scripts->registered['swfobject']->ver) && version_compare( $wp_scripts->registered['swfobject']->ver, '2.2', '<' ) ) {
    		wp_deregister_script( 'swfobject' );
    		wp_enqueue_script( 'swfobject', WEBTREATS_JS .'/swfobject.js', array(), '2.2' );
    	} else {
    		//wp_enqueue_script( 'swfobject' );
    	}
    }

    I've got the same problem with my Awake theme website.

    The full page flicker, where the page goes white as it loads the next page, occurs in all browsers I've tried and this happens on different PC's as well. Your own page at http://themes.mysitemyway.com/awake refreshes normally so it has to be my setup.

    After messing around for a few hours i've discovered that if I change the Permalink Settings to their default, then the flicker disappears. Changing the Permalinks back to custom using the "/%postname%/" entry introduces the white screen refresh flicker again.

    Default permalinks aren't an option for this website and I'm at a loss as to why this should be occuring.

    I have been struggling with this as well. I tried changing back to the default permalink, and the "white page flashing" was more brief, but still occurs. It occurs on the sample link you provided above as well. The problem occurs in all browsers I test.

    Luckily we found this bug before we got too invested in the website. If we can't solve the issue we will have to try another theme. My site is http://www.chicagodowntownliving.com/

    For us, the default links will be troublesome as well. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    @packycarton

    It seems that you've solved your problem. No flashing on your site when changing pages in Firefox v7.01 or Internet Explorer v9.08

    Do you remember how you solved it or did you just "luck out"?

    I don't see it on your site packycarton. What version of Wordpress are you using and what browser / browser version do you see the flashing on?

    I set the permalinks back to "default" - I still see a flash but it is much improved. I hope I can resolve it completely and change the permalinks back to "/%postname%/". Still trying things to tweak this. I am using Firefox 8 and IE 9.08 / WordPress 3.2.1.

    Try creating a backup of your .htaccess file, delete it, and then save your permalinks again.
