    Hi Elliot, I read through the "using child themes" info and am trying to figure out if I need to do this or is using the custom css and the custom skin enough? Is this the only way to change the theme name to my clients site name?

    If I did create a child theme, do I create a new folder altogether in teh theme area or within the theme folder i am creating the child theme for...do I need to copy all of the folders(php etc)?

    Sorry for all thh questions, but I really apprecaite the help! :)

    Hello nddiana,

    If it's just CSS your doing then it would be a lot easier to just use the custom CSS field in your admin panel or create your own skin.

    Sometimes I add things to the header php file or extra wigdet area...would those be affected by updates?

    Yes, see here, http://mysitemyway.com/docs/index.php/Using_Child_Themes. Once you create your child theme copy / paste your header.php file inside of it and you can do your edits to it.

    I am unable to pull up my website at all. Contacted my Host provider. They are saying that my child theme is corrupted. Told me to uninstall my theme and re-install it via FTP/from my end. I did that but am still unable to access my Website. Wasn't sure though how to do this. I transferred my Infocus and Infocus Child to my computer, but not wanting to lose all the customizations I've made to the theme, I re-uploaded my infocus file with all my changes. Could not access my website. Then uploaded the Child Theme with my changes, but still unable to access website. Do I need to upload just the Infocus file first, without all my changes? Very confused as to how to do this without having to start from scratch again. Host support said to contact you if this did not work. Before I uninstalled the theme, I would get the following error message on screen when going to my website: Notice: get_theme_data is deprecated since version 3.4! Use wp_get_theme() instead. in /hermes/bosweb25b/b951/ipg.rjdunnartcom/wp-includes/functions.php on line 3201 Now after doing the above, I just get a blank page. Website is rjdunnart.com
    I do have a backup copy of my Infocus Child Theme if you need to look at it. Any help is appreciated.

    Update: 1) I deleted the Infocus theme and Child Theme (that had my customations) completely from my Host directory. 2) Went to Themeforest and re-downloaded my purchased Infocus theme to make sure I had your latest version. 3) Uploaded the newly downloaded 'infocus' file to the correct directory on my Host site (did NOT upload a Child Theme, just the infocus file without any changes) and now when going to my website: http://www.rjdunnart.com, you can see the following:

    Notice: get_theme_data is deprecated since version 3.4! Use wp_get_theme() instead. in /hermes/bosweb25b/b951/ipg.rjdunnartcom/wp-includes/functions.php on line 3378 Notice: Trying to get property of non-object in /hermes/bosweb25b/b951/ipg.rjdunnartcom/wp-content/themes/infocus/lib/functions/core.php on line 1191 Notice: Trying to get property of non-object in /hermes/bosweb25b/b951/ipg.rjdunnartcom/wp-content/themes/infocus/lib/functions/theme.php on line 806

    This makes me wonder if there is a problem with Infocus needing to be updated or a bug fixed (according to instructions in Notice) to be compatible with the newer version(s) of Wordpress since it's referring to "since version 3.4!". Seems to me that others uploading a newly purchased Infocus theme would surely be getting this same Notice is that's the case. Thank you in advance for your advise/help.

    You can ignore the notices or turn off Wordpress debugging if you do not want to see them. They do not change how the theme functions.

    The problem is that the theme itself for some reason on my site is not working and I can not turn off DeBugging because this message comes up when I try to log in to the Wordpress admin panel. In other words I also am unable to log in to my Wordpress. When I try, I get the error message, not the WP Admin panel. As I stated in the previous 2 posts, I re-installed the theme and still get this error message. And Wordpress.org is pointing people who get this message to their Theme Provider, saying that it is a purchased WP Theme problem, not a problem with Wordpress.org themes (https://wordpress.org/support/topic/get_theme_data-is-deprecated-since-version-34). And My Host site is telling me the same. I would appreciate advise on how to get the Infocus theme working. Website: http://www.rjdunnart.com
    Thank you,
    RJ

  9. About child themes. I am using Infocus and have the latest updated version. I am using a child theme but I'd like to edit the fancy_box font size in my theme but it's in the shortcodes.css file. I tried using the @import function to reference shortcodes.css in my child theme, but it doesn't change when I edit.

    In the source code of the post, it shows this

    .fancy_box_content, .titled_box_content {
    position: relative;
    overflow: hidden;
    font-size: 16px;
    font-weight: normal;
    font-style: normal;
    line-height: 25px;
    clear: both;
    padding: 20px;
    }

    I'd like to edit the font size and line height but when I add the above and edit it in my child theme, it doesn't change. Can you tell me how to go about it?

    You can just copy that to your child theme stylesheet and use !important to override it.

    .fancy_box_content, .titled_box_content {
    position: relative !important;
    overflow: hidden !important;
    font-size: 16px !important;
    font-weight: normal;
    font-style: normal;
    line-height: 25px;
    clear: both;
    padding: 20px;
    }

    I know you're off to a great, fresh start with your move from MySiteMyWay to BackStop. I want to upgrade from Dejavu 2.8.5 to 2.8.6. Heeding your instructions, I want to create a child theme first (so I don't have to repeat my steps for the umpteenth time).

    I'm looking for simple-to-follow (and complete, unlike Elliott's normal half-answers he liked to give) directions on how to create a child theme for EVERYTHING I've customized in Dejavu 2.8.5. That would include a customized skin, widgets, menus and a whole lot of copy entered into the Dejavu theme.

    By the way, while I'm not a total novice, this page is over my head: https://codex.wordpress.org/Child_Themes. Do you have anything simpler? Or do you have a child theme plugin that you recommend for use with Dejavu?

    Hi Ability,

    As you can tell from previous BackStop Themes releases I have focused on cleaning up the theme from a compliance perspective, eliminating any major bugs, adding business-focused enhancements, and maintaining backward compatibility. My focus is not to "compete" with the ever-changing / ever breaking / rarely backward compatible theme market. My focus is on ensuring people who have deployed their WordPress with a BackStop theme can get the job done and run their business without disruption.

    With that in mind, you are spot-on with the suggestion of supported child themes. It is long-time overdue capability from a business perspective.

    I have on my priority "to-do" list a button to be added to the theme admin to create a child theme with a single buttonpress. This would save people from having to use cpanel to install and manage the child theme.

    In the short term I can release child theme zipfiles for people who are comfortable with cpanel and a manual upload process.

    Would end of next week be ok? And... could I ask you to raise this as an enhancement request in the BackStop Themes issue tracker (https://gitlab.com/BackStopThemes/ThemeCoreV2/issues ). I am trying to move people away from the MSMW forum to the BackStopThemes Issue repository. This MSMW forum could disappear tomorrow and we need a new place to converse.

    You can also register for the newsletter which comes out once / month with release info (https://eepurl.com/c9dU6n ).

    Cheers,
    Tim

    Thanks for your response, Tim. Is it okay for me to just copy-and-paste my post from yesterday, or would you prefer one requesting what you're suggesting, a single button that does it for you?

    Your suggestion far, far exceeds what I was requesting — and I'm loving it. The end of next week is absolutely fine with me, as I have no set deadline. I'm just looking forward to moving forward.

    Just create the request as you originally posted it...i.e. Request for Child Theme.

    The point is to get you and others to stop using this forum and switch to the BackStop Themes Issue Tracker before this forum evaporates.

    Let's continue this discussion on the issue tracker:
