I have several posts in one category. When I click on the name of the category, it brings the page with the synopsis of all the posts but that page has things on it that I don't want, like a sidebar widget with the generic words that don't make any sense and the default intro which I do not use on my pages. When I click on the category to edit it only lets me change the name, slug, etc but not the layout.

How then do I edit this to be a no sidebar layout and no intro?

If it is a standard page or post you should find an option to change the layout. Take a look under screen options for "Elegance General Page Options" or "Elegance General Post Options".

If this is a custom post then you will need to modify the source to get the option under the theme admin Advanced section to enable the option on the custom post admin. See http://mysitemyway.com/support/topic/bbpress-and-pagelayout .
