Basic Portfolio Concept

  1. As I understand it, I use the short codes to make a portfolio with a particular category filter(s).
    Then I do a post (I assume a post is a post... no such thing as a portfolio post... the portfolio just filters according to the category of the posts, right?)
    Anyway, I have one post with a category of "team"
    I have a portfolio with cat="team".
    However, the portfolio complains that there are no posts with the selected category.
    I wonder what I am doing wrong here?

  2. OK, I get it...
    A portfolio is nothing but a page with the portfolio code on it,
    and what the system calls "portfolios" are not portfolios at all, but rather portfolio items or portfolio posts.

    Is that it?

    Indeed, the portfolio shortcode does not retrieve regular posts. You have to create those special posts as portfolio items. Then, insert the shortcode in one of your pages and it will display the portfolio items that you previously created.

  4. Ruderic:
    Minor feedback idea for you.
    It would be less confusing if the portfolios were called portfolio itemsportfolio posts (anything but portfolio)... probably cut down on your support calls.
    A clear statement of what I said above.... portfolios are constructed with a page with the portfolio short code which then filters portfolio items to display the portfolio items according to their category.
    Just a suggestion for the non-tech ones of us... give the overall concept, change the name from portfolio to porfolio posts/items/whatever, so it is clear that the current "add portfolio" really doesn't mean add portfolio at all, but rather "add portfolio item/post".

    Hello TerryHunter,

    That's probably a good idea. If you open up /wp-content/themes/[your_theme]/lib/functions/theme.php you can change the way Wordpress displays those labels around line 352,

    register_post_type('portfolio', array(
    	'labels' => array(
    		'name' => _x('Portfolios', 'post type general name', MYSITE_ADMIN_TEXTDOMAIN ),
    		'singular_name' => _x('Portfolio', 'post type singular name', MYSITE_ADMIN_TEXTDOMAIN ),
    		'add_new' => _x('Add New', 'portfolio', MYSITE_ADMIN_TEXTDOMAIN ),
    		'add_new_item' => __('Add New Portfolio', MYSITE_ADMIN_TEXTDOMAIN ),
    		'edit_item' => __('Edit Portfolio', MYSITE_ADMIN_TEXTDOMAIN ),
    		'new_item' => __('New Portfolio', MYSITE_ADMIN_TEXTDOMAIN ),
    		'view_item' => __('View Portfolio', MYSITE_ADMIN_TEXTDOMAIN ),
    		'search_items' => __('Search Portfolios', MYSITE_ADMIN_TEXTDOMAIN ),
    		'not_found' =>  __('No portfolios found', MYSITE_ADMIN_TEXTDOMAIN ),
    		'not_found_in_trash' => __('No portfolios found in Trash', MYSITE_ADMIN_TEXTDOMAIN ),
    		'parent_item_colon' => ''

    I'll move this to feature requests and we'll take a look at it.

    Hello - A frustrated newbie here. :) I hope you can shine some light. I have been trying to create a portfolio with no luck. I have read everything above, read all the documentation, and I am still getting the message that no portfolio posts were found for the category selected, even though I have created "New Portfolios" (I think this means a "portfolio post"), clicked the categories that I want to display, and then inserted "portfolio shortcode" into each of the "Portfolio pages/posts".

    Here is one example of my shortcode:
    [portfolio_list thumb="medium" showposts="5" cat="social-media,youtube"] I have checked the categories, and there are "portfolio pages/posts" in each of the categories, but still get the error message that there are no portfolio posts to display.

    What am I doing wrong??

    Could someone please provide a very minute step-by-step instruction for a complete newbie? (go to this page, click this button, select these options, then click this button - from the very first step to the creation of a successful portfolio). I have read the documentation repeatedly, but it is not detailed enough in terms of the steps. For example, when you say to "insert the shortcode into one of the pages" I am inserting something but apparently not the right thing as I don't get the desired result. Also "one of the pages" is not entirely clear since I am not getting any results to show up on any of my portfolio pages despite them all having shortcode on them and categories checked.

    I can see that InFocus is very robust and I am looking forward to using it. It looks like it will be easy after I know what to do, but the documentation could be a little more micro-detailed for a newbie. I am hoping that things will pick up quickly from here on in after I master and am loving portfolios...!!

    Thanks for any guidance you can provide. :)

    Hello marinca,

    There is a current bug when using multiple categories with the portfolio shortcode. You can do this as a quick fix,

    Thanks for the reply. Even when I do a single category and after uploading the quick fix with the new 15-portfolio.php file I get the same result - no portfolio posts display. I see that others are having the same difficulty getting the portfolio to display properly and that many of us chose this theme specifically for the portfolio. I think it would be tremendously helpful if you could do a screencast of how to create a portfolio because there are obviously steps we are missing that are not coming through clearly in the written documentation yet would be crystal clear in a screencast. It might take you 15 minutes to create and would save your customers many many hours of trying to figure it out.

    Rather than start a new discussion, I will jump in to this one as it seems to be exactly the same issue I am facing. I must just not be understanding the portfolio concept. I have created a portfolio category, and created two example portfolios. Each of those has a feature image and a portfolio code of:
    [portfolio_list thumb="small" showposts="9" cat="guitar-strings-2"]

    I placed the portfolio category onto my menu so it can be navigated to, but it doesn't show any posts. I also tried adding the individual portfolios to the menu, but that also doesnt give results.

    I think it is confusing me whether this is a 2 level structure, as I described above: Portfolio category contains portfolios (which are individual items) - in which case you would expect the layout code to be attached to the category, rather than the individual items (but I can't see a way to do that).

    Or, is it a 3 level structure where Portfolio categories contain Portfolios, which contain Portfolio items, which makes sense to me, but in that case the layout code would be in the 2nd level (Portfolios), and what I am missing is how to create the 3rd level 'Items'.

    If someone can explain this for me I would be most grateful - I'm happy to send details by PM if that helps. I agree with a previous poster that a video tutorial on this would be very helpful - I went over and over the text instructions many many times without success.

    Hello kevmartin,

    You need to create a new page and then insert the portfolio shortcode inside,

    [portfolio_list thumb="small" showposts="9" cat="guitar-strings-2"]

    You can use our shortcode generator inside the page,, to make it easier.

    Thanks for replying. That doesn't seem to have made any difference. So now I have created:

    1 portfolio category

    2 x 'portfolios' (from the add new portfolio page)

    1 x portfolio post (as per your instructions in the previous reply

    But I am not seeing any portfolio anything like the example.

    Please advise. I'll PM you my site details so you can see it.

    Hi Elliott, I too am having trouble. I love this theme. I'm a writer with no visual or tech knowledge whatsoever and yet my site is looking great. However, I have read and read, and tried and tried, to figure out how to create a portfolio. I'm beat. There was a request in these threads asking for a screencast. Is there a video or something that gives very detailed steps? I'm trying to showcase a print ad in one column when you land on the page and then, after that, I want the page to have 2 columns. I also wanted text under each one but it never shows up. I have tried everything and I'm just way too confused. I'm a complete newbie and I'd love something step by step. Is there something beyond the documentation? Here's my site: Thank you.

    Hi Elliott, I hope you don't mind but I may as well ask another question while i'm at it. I've managed to darken the font across my site by editing my skin. However, it doesn't apply to the home page widget areas. Do you have an easy suggestion that doesn't include changing the theme as a whole? I read posts about going into style sheets and such but I love my site and don't want to do anything drastic. Here's the site again Thank you!
